Understanding one’s marketing options as a writer is critical to career longevity. A much expanded version of the short seminar, Marketing for Writers, this multi-week course will explore what marketing means for authors specifically; how to work within and outside the publishers’ marketing engine; and connecting authentically with readers. Through readings, research, lecture, and discussion, we will dive into a different topic each week, such as:

  • Class 1: What is Book Marketing? Setting Goals
    • An introduction to terminology, marketing expectations, and audience
  • Class 2: Building Your Marketing Groundwork
    • Authorial persona, press kits, and choosing marketing strategy options
  • Class 3: Social Media and Building Community
    • Social media platforms, finding and growing creative communities, good literary citizenship
  • Class 4: Publicity: “Earned” Promotions
    • Role of publicists, word-of-mouth marketing, crafting pitches for reviews and events
  • Class 5: Sustainable Marketing
    • Writing/life balance, creating sustainable marketing practices, finding support, next steps

After exploring each topic, we will brainstorm and share ideas for how each student can implement these marketing tools into their own career. Between classes, students will be asked to build on these ideas as part of their own marketing goals. Students will come away from this course with in-depth strategies, ideas, and plans for embarking on their own marketing journey, no matter where they are in the publishing process.

This class as a limit of 5 total students. Registeration will close on Monday, January 27th. After purchasing your ticket, you'll receive a welcome email from Allison with the Zoom links and more information.
